A washing machine that refuses to spin or drain is one of the most common appliance problems in Indian homes. Clothes stuck soaking wet in the drum — it's frustrating, and if left unrepaired, the standing water can cause mould and damage your machine further. Here are the top 5 causes and how each is fixed.

1. Clogged Drain Filter or Drain Hose

The most common — and easiest to fix — cause of a washing machine not draining. Coins, hairpins, lint, and small cloth fibres accumulate in the drain filter and block water from exiting.

Signs: Machine completes wash but water remains in the drum; error code E1 or F21 on display; machine makes a loud humming during drain cycle.

DIY fix (front-load): Locate the small door at the bottom front of the machine, place a towel, twist open the filter cap slowly, let water drain, remove debris, replace cap.

Also check: The drain hose isn't kinked, and the end is not inserted too far into the standpipe (which creates a siphon effect).

2. Broken or Worn Drive Belt

In top-load machines (and some older front-loaders), a rubber belt connects the motor to the drum. When this belt snaps or stretches, the drum won't spin even though the motor is running.

Signs: You hear the motor humming but the drum doesn't rotate; burnt rubber smell during wash cycle.

3. Faulty Lid Switch (Top-Load) or Door Latch (Front-Load)

Washing machines have a safety switch that prevents spinning if the lid or door isn't securely closed. A broken switch fools the machine into thinking the door is always open — so it refuses to spin.

Signs (top-load): Machine fills and agitates but won't spin; lid switch makes no click when pressed.

Signs (front-load): Door lock light flashes; machine won't start spin cycle; error code dL or F/H.

4. Motor or Motor Capacitor Failure
